A night with Monsieur Bermutier

Monsieur Bermutier en Francais...

The French edition of 'Monsieur Bermutier', published by Casterman, will hit stores in a couple of weeks. Around the 20th of august to be exact. Earlier this week I finally got the book in my mailbox and it looks very, very good. I'm excited off course and I will be collecting all reviews in this post.

Après I Fucking Love Paris, un deuxième titre du flamand Maarten Vande Wiele, adapté d’une série de nouvelles de Maupassant.

Le deuxième album chez Casterman de l’auteur de I Fucking Love Paris, Maarten Vande Wiele, est une adaptation en bande dessinée de nouvelles de Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893). Monsieur Bermutier, figure principale et récurrente de ces courts récits, est un personnage de juge qui évoque ses souvenirs au fil des histoires qui composent le recueil. Des souvenirs criminels pour l’essentiel, qui le conduisent, sur un mode distant et parfois presque badin, à rappeler différentes affaires rencontrées au cours de sa carrière. Racontée à la manière d’enquêtes policières, cette suite de portraits plutôt accablants donne de l’humanité un triste reflet. Mais au fait, qui est Bermutier lui-même, auquel son parcours professionnel a conféré une expertise inégalée en matière de psychoses, vices, déviances et dissimulations en tout genre ?
On pense à Hercule Poirot pour le personnage de Bermutier, à Loustal parfois pour l’élégance graphique aquarellée et le sens de la couleur – mais on songe surtout à la touche cruelle et mordante déjà découverte dans le premier titre de Maarten Vande Wiele et qui se perpétue ici sous une autre forme, aussi convaincante. Plus qu’un style, c’est un ton, une identité, un projet ; et il ne passe pas inaperçu.

The hand
